What the clearances cover
PicoWay is FDA-cleared for benign pigmented lesions in Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV, for acne scars with the Resolve 1064 nm handpiece in types II–V, and for wrinkles in types I–IV. PicoSure received clearance for benign pigmented lesions in 2012 and for acne scars and wrinkles in 2014.

What to expect
This varies by provider, and not only by preference. Pico toning is delivered by several different devices — PicoWay, PicoSure, PicoPlus and others — and each has its own wavelengths, handpieces and cleared skin-type range. The number of sessions, the interval between them and what the laser is cleared to treat all follow from which machine the clinic owns. Ask which device and wavelength will be used before you compare quotes.

Before you book
Clinical studies of picosecond lasers commonly exclude recent unprotected sun exposure or an active tan in the treatment area, pregnancy or breastfeeding, a history of melanoma in the area, a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, recent retinoid use, and significant immunosuppression. These are study exclusion criteria rather than manufacturer contraindications, but they are the same factors a physician screens for.
